Tiebreaker Hierarchy & Standings Calculations

How Picklemix calculates standings and breaks ties across round robins, ladder leagues, and team matches.

Oct 11, 2026 — Paul Stroud

Picklemix calculates standings in real time as scores enter the system. To eliminate ambiguity, all rankings follow an explicit mathematical hierarchy determined by the event format.

Standings Formulas by Format

Format Category Primary Sort Key Secondary Sort Key Database Expression
Game-Based Round Robin Winning Percentage (Wins ÷ Played) Point Differential (Points For − Against) win_pct × 10000 + point_diff
Match-Based Round Robin Total Match Wins Point Differential across all sub-games wins × 10000 + point_diff
Team Matches (4-Person / 3-Person) Match Wins Game Wins, then Point Differential matches_won → games_won → point_diff

The \"1224\" Competition Ranking Rule

When two players or teams produce the exact same sort value, Picklemix applies standard competition ranking (the 1224 rule):

  • Tied participants share the higher rank number (e.g., two players tied for first are both awarded Rank 1).
  • The next distinct score resumes at its true positional rank (Rank 3, skipping Rank 2).
  • Fixed-partner doubles teams always share identical ranks because their match outcomes and scores are identical across all rounds.

Breaking Unresolved Ties

In the rare event that two participants share identical win percentages and identical point differentials:

  1. Head-to-Head Result: If the tied participants played against each other, the winner of that direct match is awarded the higher standing.
  2. Total Points Scored: If head-to-head was split or not applicable, the participant with the higher total offensive points scored takes the higher seed.
  3. Registration Timestamp: If points are completely equal, the system sorts by earliest event registration timestamp.

Dreambreakers in Team Matches

In 4-Person Team Matches (mixed or open), a match can finish tied 2–2 (in 4-game events) or 3–3 (in 6-game events). When enabled, a tie triggers Game 7: the Dreambreaker:

  • Played as singles between the designated first pair (M1 vs M1 and F1 vs F1 on mixed events).
  • Scored directly to decide the winning team of the overall match.
  • If the Dreambreaker is toggled off at creation, the match outcome is officially recorded as a draw.
