Courtside Scoring & Offline Sync: Scanning, Queuing, and Reconnect

How scoring works at courts with spotty reception: 3-up QR scanning, the local outbox queue, background sync on reconnect, and score conflict resolution.

Pickleball courts in municipal parks and indoor facilities often have weak cellular reception. Picklemix queues scores locally when reception drops, syncing automatically upon reconnect.

Native App vs. PWA Web: Offline Capabilities

Both web and mobile clients support courtside scoring, with distinct offline architectures:

Feature Native Mobile App (iOS / Android) PWA / Mobile Web Browser
QR Scanning Hardware camera subsystem; scans 3-up QR cards instantly offline. Web camera API; requires browser permissions and active page load.
Offline Outbox Persistent SQLite database; persists even if app is closed or phone restarts. Browser IndexedDB / Service Worker cache; retained until tab is cleared.
Sync Triggers Automatic background sync upon cellular or Wi-Fi reconnect. Syncs upon active window focus when network reconnects.

The Offline Scoring Flow

  1. Scan the 3-Up Court Card: Scan the printed QR card at the court fence. The scorecard opens from cached tournament metadata.
  2. Enter and Verify Scores: Enter the final score (e.g., 11–9). Both teams confirm on screen.
  3. Queued Locally: If the device is out of cell range, an amber \"Saved to Outbox (Offline)\" badge appears. The score is timestamped and saved in local storage.
  4. Automatic Sync on Reconnect: Once cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity returns, the outbox submits queued scores in order and updates tournament standings.

Handling Score Conflicts

If players on opposing teams submit conflicting scores while offline:

  • The match is flagged as \"Disputed\" upon sync.
  • Both submissions and device timestamps are preserved in the audit log.
  • The tournament organizer receives a notification to confirm the correct score before advancing the bracket.

Courtside Organizer Checklist for Weak-Signal Venues

  • Print 3-Up QR Cards in Advance: Pre-print match sheets with direct QR tokens from the event export page.
  • Encourage Native App Pre-Download: Recommend players install the Picklemix native app on home Wi-Fi before heading to remote venues.
  • Station Central Scoring Backup: For larger events, keep an organizer device connected to a mobile hotspot at the desk for manual score checks.
