Round Robin with Playoffs: Pool Play to Bracket Transitions
A round-robin pool feeding an automatic bracket: how pool play ranks players, how top seeds pair into doubles teams, and when playoffs generate.
Round Robin with Playoffs combines an opening round-robin pool with an automatic championship bracket: players compete individually to earn seeding, and the top four finishers advance into doubles teams for the medal round.
Format Overview
An event runs in two or three distinct phases under a single master event:
- Phase 1 (Round Robin Pool): All entrants play a standard rotating-partner or fixed-partner round robin. Every game counts toward individual ranking.
- Phase 2 (Championship Playoff): The top four players from Phase 1 advance, form two seeded doubles teams, and play for first and second place.
- Phase 3 (Consolation Playoff, Optional): When consolation is enabled, the bottom four players advance to play for fifth place.
How the Phase Cutoff Works
Advancement triggers automatically when the final score of Phase 1 is recorded. Standings are ranked by a strict two-tier formula:
- Winning Percentage: Total games won divided by total games played.
- Point Differential: Total points scored minus total points conceded across all pool games.
In the event database, this is evaluated as win% × 10000 + point_diff. The top four players in this ranking advance to Phase 2.
Playoff Team Formation & Seed Pairings
Advancing players do not pick their partners. Teams are formed directly from seed order:
| Phase | Bracket Role | Team 1 Roster | Team 2 Roster |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 2 | Championship Playoff | Seed 1 & Seed 2 | Seed 3 & Seed 4 |
| Phase 3 | Consolation Playoff (if enabled) | Seed 5 & Seed 6 | Seed 7 & Seed 8 |
Playoff Styles
The organizer chooses the playoff style at event creation:
- Double Elimination (Type 36): A best-of-3 series between Team 1 and Team 2. The first team to win two games wins the championship.
- Single Elimination (Type 37): A single game between Team 1 and Team 2. The winner takes first place; the loser takes second place.
- Consolation (Type 38): Plays as a single game between Team 3 (Seeds 5 & 6) and Team 4 (Seeds 7 & 8).
Courtside Workflow
- Unified Entry Fee: Players pay one entry fee for the entire event during Phase 1. The playoff child events carry no additional fee.
- Automatic Bracket Generation: As soon as the last Phase 1 score is submitted via Fast Scoring or the mobile app,
AdvancementServicegenerates the playoff bracket immediately. - Live Standings Hub: The Round Robin + Playoffs hub displays the active Phase 1 pool standings alongside the generated Phase 2 and Phase 3 bracket cards.
