Everyone starts in the winners bracket. A first loss drops you into the losers bracket, where you can still reach the final; a second loss ends your event.
Bracket size. The draw rounds up to the next power of two, and the shortfall becomes byes. Entrants are drawn at random unless the bracket is seeded from an earlier phase, in which case the finishing order is kept.
Where byes land. One entrant is placed in each first-round match before any match gets a second, so byes spread across the draw rather than clustering. That keeps at most one real loser in each opening losers-bracket pairing.
The final. If the winners-bracket entrant takes the grand final, it ends there. If the losers-bracket entrant wins it, both have one loss and a reset match decides the event.

Match counts include both grand final slots. The reset is only played when the losers-bracket entrant wins the first one.
