The 8-Player Mixer: 7 Rounds, 2 Courts, Zero Byes

An 8-player, 2-court mixer: 7 rounds, 100% court utilization, every player partners with everyone once and plays against everyone twice.

Oct 11, 2026 — Paul Stroud

An 8-player, 2-court mixer runs in 7 rounds. Every player partners with each person once, plays against everyone twice, and no one sits out.

The 8-Player Schedule Math

Small-group mixers often struggle with unbalanced sit-outs. An 8-player round robin on two courts eliminates downtime:

  • Total Rounds: 7 rounds of doubles.
  • Courts Needed: Exactly 2 courts.
  • Court Utilization: 100% (all 8 players active every round).
  • Partnerships: You partner with every person exactly 1 time.
  • Opponents: You face every other player across the net exactly 2 times.

Complete 7-Round Rotation Schedule

Assign players numbers 1 through 8 before Round 1. Follow this pairing matrix for each round:

Round Court 1 Matchup Court 2 Matchup Round Notes
Round 1 (1 & 2) vs (3 & 4) (5 & 6) vs (7 & 8) Initial matchups
Round 2 (1 & 3) vs (5 & 7) (2 & 4) vs (6 & 8) First rotation shuffle
Round 3 (1 & 4) vs (6 & 7) (2 & 3) vs (5 & 8) Cross-pairings
Round 4 (1 & 5) vs (2 & 8) (3 & 7) vs (4 & 6) Midway mark (every player at 3 matches)
Round 5 (1 & 6) vs (3 & 8) (2 & 7) vs (4 & 5) Split pairings
Round 6 (1 & 7) vs (2 & 6) (3 & 5) vs (4 & 8) Penultimate round
Round 7 (1 & 8) vs (2 & 5) (3 & 6) vs (4 & 7) Final round completing all 7 partnerships

Timing & Scoring Format

Recommended schedule for a 90-minute court booking:

  • Game Format: Play to 11 points (win by 1), or a fixed 10-minute running clock.
  • Transition Buffer: 2 minutes between rounds to report scores and change courts.
  • Total Playing Time: ~70 minutes on court per player.

Individual Standings & Tiebreakers

Because partners change every round, standings are tracked individually:

  1. Total Wins: Most games won out of 7.
  2. Point Differential: Total points scored minus total points allowed across all 7 games.
  3. Head-to-Head: Breaks ties if wins and point differentials are equal.
